Trigger warning: heart defects, surgery.

​
As many of you know, my son was born with severe congenital heart defects and had open-heart surgery when he was one week old. Since then, he’s been in and out of the hospital, where he is currently, after undergoing his second open-heart surgery. (Which went perfectly 🙏.)

​

It doesn’t get any easier to see your baby in pain but our utter astonishment at the power of medicine and miracles keeps expanding.

​

Because this time, a true miracle happened.

​

Most babies who receive stents, have to upgrade them as they grow. Which means more hospital stays, more procedures. More pain.

​

But Raphael’s doctor helped invent a special stent that grows with the baby and requires minimal maintenance. Seriously groundbreaking.
​

​

The problem was, that stent hadn’t yet been approved by the FDA and Raphael’s condition was deteriorating.

​

His team told us we couldn’t wait any longer and he would receive the old stent. We were beyond disappointed.

​

And then we got the phone call.

​

One day before his scheduled procedure, the FDA approved it. Not only that, since it was his doctor who invented it, Raphael could immediately get access. No waiting. No red tape.

​

Raphael was the first baby at Cedars-Sinai to receive it and the whole stent team came down to thank us, in their words, “for giving them the coolest day ever.”
​

​

I’m not sure the true miracle was getting the FDA approval in time.

​

I think it was all the people who made it happen.

​

The people who quit their jobs to join a medical startup, to gamble on a new device, to keep going through the ups and downs of uncertainty, all with the conviction that they were doing something that mattered.

​

I share this story with you because we are on this Earth for a nanosecond and you should do something that matters. To you.

​

That doesn’t mean you have to change the world or save babies' lives.

​
You do need to save one life though. Your own.

​

Whatever chaos is going on around or inside you, you have a choice in how you show up. In what you do. In who you are. So who do you choose to be? Grounded? Full of love? More connected? More intentional?

​

Whatever it is, there’s no need to do it by yourself.

​
